Ring Sizing & Fit
Can an Eternity Ring Be Resized? A Guide for Jewellery Retailers
An eternity ring needs to be assessed as a complete setting before anyone promises to change its size. The important question is not simply how many sizes the customer needs. It is whether the existing construction can accommodate the alteration while retaining the intended stone security, spacing and appearance.

An eternity ring needs to be assessed as a complete setting before anyone promises to change its size. The important question is not simply how many sizes the customer needs. It is whether the existing construction can accommodate the alteration while retaining the intended stone security, spacing and appearance.
For a retailer, an early explanation of that distinction makes the conversation more useful. Some rings have a plain section that can be considered for alteration. Others carry stones around the entire circumference, leaving a very different problem for the workshop. Neither description, by itself, confirms that a particular ring is suitable.
Discuss can an eternity ring be resized
Send photographs of the entire band and the required size change for an initial assessment.
Start with the actual stone layout
A half eternity ring usually offers a different assessment route from a fully set band because the underside may contain an uninterrupted section of metal. Ask the workshop to inspect that section, its remaining thickness and its relationship to the stone-set shoulders. A plain area that looks generous in a photograph may still be worn, engraved or previously altered.
A full eternity ring brings the repeated settings into the sizing decision. Removing or adding part of the circumference can affect the relationship between stones and their supporting metal. Do not describe the work as a standard shank cut without first identifying how the setting is built.
Record the starting size and requested fit
Supply the measured ring size, the requested finished size and the width of the band. If the customer was measured using a much narrower sample ring, record that too. The workshop needs a useful fit reference, not a size copied from an unrelated purchase.
Explain whether the issue is constant tightness, difficulty passing the knuckle or unwanted movement once the ring is on. These are different observations. A&M’s ring-sizing service starts with assessment of the ring and its construction; the existing sizing brief guide explains the information to collect.
Inspect the settings before choosing a route
An alteration should not be planned around stone security that has only been assumed. Ask for the condition of the settings to be considered alongside the proposed size change. Previous repairs, missing stones and visibly uneven sections should be identified separately from the sizing instruction.
GIA’s platinum ring-sizing example illustrates why stones in the shank require their own assessment. It is an example of a particular construction, not evidence that every eternity ring can be altered by the same method. The professional decision must relate to the ring on the bench.
Before you approve the work
Confirm what the setting can accommodate before offering the customer a resizing promise.
Discuss alternatives without promising a result
Where direct resizing is unsuitable, the next discussion may concern a different fit solution or a newly made ring. Ask the workshop what is technically feasible before presenting either as an available remedy. A proposed internal adjustment also needs to suit the wearer and the available space inside the ring.
If a new ring is considered, clarify whether existing stones could be reused, what condition checks would be required and how the finished design might differ. Reusing stones is a separate commission with its own approval points. It should not be presented as a simple continuation of a routine resize.
Give the customer a decision they can understand
The strongest recommendation explains the assessed construction, the proposed change and any visible or functional compromise. Record the accepted size, the agreed scope and whether setting repairs are included. Where the workshop declines an alteration, explain the reason in terms of the ring’s construction rather than offering a universal rule about all eternity rings.
A clear assessment protects the customer from an unsuitable promise and gives the retailer a defensible basis for discussing the next option. Fit, setting condition and the intended result belong in the same decision.

Frequently asked questions
Is a half eternity ring always resizable?
No. Its plain underside may offer an alteration route, but the metal condition, setting construction, previous work and requested size change still need assessment.
Can one stone simply be removed to make an eternity ring smaller?
Do not assume so. The workshop must consider the surrounding settings, spacing and finished shape before proposing any change to a fully set band.
Should the customer supply the original receipt?
It can help identify the maker and specification. Include any useful design or repair records, while making clear that the physical ring still needs inspection.
