Jewellery CAD Units and Scale: Checking a File Before Handover
Jewellery CAD units and scale can be overlooked when a model appears correct on screen.

Jewellery CAD units and scale can be overlooked when a model appears correct on screen. A viewer can enlarge a small object or reduce a large one without revealing whether the underlying file uses the intended measurement system. Visual familiarity is not a scale check.
Before sending a production file, identify the units and a few critical reference dimensions. Ask the receiving party to verify those values in the imported model rather than assuming the transfer preserves every setting.

State units in the handover record
Include the measurement system in the file note and drawing. Use consistent units within the brief, and make any conversion explicit. Avoid mixing a millimetre drawing with an unexplained number from another system.
The recipient should know which file is for production and which is only a visual reference. A rendered image may show dimensions, but it does not carry the same geometric information as the model.
Choose useful check dimensions
Select dimensions that reveal a scale problem, such as a defined overall span and a known internal opening. Use clearly identified endpoints. Check more than one feature where different components could have been imported separately.
Do not rely on ring size text alone if its measurement convention is unclear. A dimensional reference should be independently understandable by the person receiving the file.
Confirm the scope before work starts
Supply the relevant photographs, measurements and known material details. Ask the workshop to assess the proposed work.
Record the export and revision
Identify the file format, model revision and intended next process. Ask the receiving supplier which output it requires. The renders and production files guide helps separate the different deliverables.
If the supplier requests another export, keep it connected to the same approved model and repeat the scale check. A new filename is not evidence that the export settings are correct.
Confirm the received result
Ask for confirmation of the agreed dimensions after import. If a mismatch appears, stop the production release and resolve the source rather than compensating informally at the next stage. Record the corrected file as the current instruction.
Where multiple parts form an assembly, verify their relative positions and dimensions too. An individually correct component may still be misplaced in the combined model.
Make scale a release check
A brief confirmation of units, dimensions and revision gives the next supplier a reliable starting point. It is a practical file-handover check, separate from approving the design's appearance.

Frequently asked questions
Can I judge scale from a screenshot?
Not reliably. Display zoom changes appearance. Check the model's units and measured reference dimensions in the receiving software.
Does a familiar file format guarantee the right units?
Do not assume that it does. Confirm the export requirements and verify the imported dimensions for the actual transfer.
