Understanding rhodium and surface finishes
Rhodium can change the colour of the surface. It cannot correct the condition underneath it.
White gold is often plated with rhodium for a bright white appearance. The plating wears over time, so the underlying preparation and the way the piece will be worn both matter.
Plating is the final colour layer, not a substitute for surface work.
Rhodium can give white gold a brighter white appearance, but it follows the surface underneath. Dents, porosity, deep marks and worn settings need their own assessment before the finishing sequence is agreed.
The brief should distinguish colour from texture. A bright white surface can still be polished, satin or part of a two-tone finish, and those boundaries need to be marked clearly.
Before plating
- Check stone security and the integrity of the setting.
- Resolve dents, porosity, solder marks and deep damage that should not remain visible.
- Confirm which areas need rhodium and which must retain another colour or finish.
Choose the finish
- High polish reflects light sharply and shows surface definition.
- Satin should have a stated direction and level of texture.
- Two-tone and contrast work needs clear boundaries between surfaces.
Aftercare expectations
- Rhodium is a surface layer and will wear gradually.
- High-contact areas may show wear sooner.
- Periodic inspection is sensible because prong wear and plating wear are separate issues.
Specification gaps that compromise a rhodium brief
- Requesting “rhodium” without identifying which areas should be plated.
- Expecting plating alone to hide deep surface damage.
- Leaving textured, engraved or contrasting areas unmarked.
- Treating a surface coating as permanent rather than a finish that wears.
